Samsung Galaxy S22 Series Smart Phones

BODY & DESIGN

All of the variants in the S22 Series shares the same body build materials. The three phones are encapsulated with Gorilla Glass Victus Plus on the front and rear, while the mid-section comes in an aluminium frame. In its earlier S21 Series, Samsung has already leapt forward in Body Design materials by introducing the Gorilla Glass Victus. And for some reason, Apple’s iPhone 13 didn’t catch up with this upgrade, yet this new S22 Series comes with another upgrade in its phone’s body’s building materials. Although there are no words regarding the critical differences between Gorilla Glass Victus and Victus Plus, the phones from the S22 Series comes with durability and scratch resistance of Gorilla Glass Victus, which is far better than Gorilla Glass.

The variants, however, show noticeable differences in the context of their dimension and weights. The weight shows an ascending symmetry among its variants. The base variant S22 weights the lowest at 167 g (approx). The top variant, S22 Ultra, weights the highest, i.e. 228 gm (approx) and the middle variant rests at 195 g (approx). Speaking of their dimensions, S22 ultra has an extra thickness of 0.05” while the other two of the variants shares a thickness of 0.30”. S22 is the only model with a height below 6”,i.e. 5.75”. The other S22 Plus and S22 Ultra models have 6.20” and 6.43” of height, respectively. The width of the variants measures to be 2.78”, 2.98” and 3.07” from the base to top design.

All three smartphones from the Series fully support Single SIM (Nano-SIM) or Dual SIM (Nano- SIMs) and an additional e-SIM. In addition, the phones are all tested against the International Standard Rating of IP68, and they are resistant to dust and sand particles. They also show the water resistivity for up to 30 minutes while submerged in up to 1.5 meters water depth.

The design of the body for S22 and S22 Plus is identical. Both the variants have a flat body design and curved edges. While the volume and power buttons rest on the phone’s right side, the sim tray, charging port, and loudspeaker can be found on the bottom of the phone. While the camera array and flashlight placement are the same as that of the S21 Series, the minor difference in the S22 Series is that the camera island no longer blends with the side aluminium frame. Instead, it appears as a mount on the back of the phone as we view it from the side. Additionally, the camera island shares the phone’s colour pattern, unlike the S21 Series. The brand name lies on the lower half of the phone’s back. The screen comes with a very narrow bezel and an in-display selfie camera on the front.

These two models come in 4 primary colours: Phantom White, Phantom Black, Green and Pink Gold. But if you put an order directly at Samsung, you get to choose from the other four colour categories: Graphite, Cream, Sky Blue and Violet.

The top variant of the Series, S22 Ultra, has an entirely different build to its body. The phone is designed with squared-off edges rather than curved ones and has rounded sides on its display. The volume controls and powers buttons rest on the right of the phone’s display, and the sim tray, charging port and loudspeaker lies at the bottom of the phone, similar to the other variants. However, there is an addition of a stylus holder next to the loudspeaker in S22 Ultra. The stylus gives a whole new edge to S22 Ultra. Although this feature is more linked with the Note Series of Samsung, integrating the feature into S22 Ultra is a bold move from Samsung. The integrated stylus can be used for photo editing with higher precision, hand-write on the phone’s screen or for a better navigation experience. In addition, the decreased latency of the stylus will let its user have a smooth experience while interacting with their phones with the help of the stylus.

The phone, S22 Ultra, features a total of 4 cameras. And unlike with the other two variants, these cameras don’t perch over the camera island. Instead, they protrude through the back of the phones. The three cameras with larger lenses align on the phone’s edge, while the other camera with a smaller lens lies beside the middle camera. The flashlight lies just above the small camera. The screen has no side bezels on the front, thanks to its rounded edge. And just like with its other two variants, the front camera blends into the phone’s display over the top.

This variant also comes with four primary colour choices: Phantom White, Phantom Black, Green and Burgundy. Additionally, while buying it exclusively from Samsung, we can choose among Graphite, Sky Blue and Red colours. The integrated stylus S22 Ultra undoubtedly stands out among its variants.

DISPLAY

As for the display, all three variants use the same screen type: a Dynamic AMOLED 2X. With this display, S22 and S22+ support the HDR10+ display and adaptive refresh rate ranging from 48Hz to 120HZ. While S22 Ultra has an adaptive refresh rate ranging from 10Hz to 120Hz for S22 Ultra. A slight difference is that S22 and S22+ shares a flat display panel, while S22 Ultra comes with a curved display. However, all three variants come with an in-display built ultrasonic fingerprint scanner.

Another identical feature is Always-On Display in all of the three variants. And although S22 and S22+ share the exact resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels, they differ in terms of their density. S22 comes with ~425 ppi density, while S22+ has a pixel density of ~393. So even though we are offered a small display size of 6.1” in S22, it will give us more precise picture quality than S22+ with a display size of 6.6”. However, the Ultra version tops the other variants in every display aspect. The 6.8” display screen with a resolution of 1440 x 3088 pixels offers ~500 ppi density will surely let its user have a wholesome experience for their mobile use.

All the phones of the S22 Series display the extraordinary brightness level for outdoor viewing. 1300 nits (peak) for S22 and 1750 nits (peak) for S22+ and S22 Ultra. To help you reflect more into the nits number, 1000 nits is excellent for viewing your device screen directly under bright sunlight.

MEMORY & PLATFORM

While the S22 and S22+ versions offer 8GB RAM and 128 GB or 256GB storage, S22 Ultra provides freedom. The base model for S22 Ultra comes with 8GB RAM and 128 GB storage. Its three upgraded models pack 12GB RAM and choice from 128GB, 512GB or 1TB of storage. All variants follow the ideal no card slot concept.

All three devices hold either Exynos 2200 (4 nm) or Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (4 nm) chipset. Although there is a little difference in performance factor between these two chipsets, the divergence is more for the distribution rather than anything else. Devices with Exynos 2200 chipset are designed to be distributed within Europe, while the next chipset design is for the Rest of the World.

In addition to the similar chipset, the variants also run on the same OS, i.e., Android 12. Further, the Android 12 OS has received a slight upgrade in its One UI 4.1 version compared to its earlier One UI 4.0, and the phones reflects to the changes as well. A notable change is the improvised RAM Plus feature. The limiter of 4GB onboard storage to expand into virtual RAM has been removed, and now the user can use 2,4,6 or 8 GB of onboard storage as virtual RAM when needed. A retouched calendar app with added smart features improved seamless connectivity with Microsoft apps are other minor adjustments in this version. The phones are designed for four years of software upgrade and five years of security patches support before reaching the end of their support cycle.

All the variants come in two versions in its CPU (Octa-core) and GPU combination. And again, the difference is rather for the distribution process. If you want to get details of what your phone is packed with, googling the following components might help. CPU | GPU : 1x2.8 GHz Cortex-X2 & 3x2.50 GHz Cortex-A710 & 4x1.8 GHz Cortex-A510 | Xclipse 920 [Designed for Europe distribution] CPU | GPU : 1x3.00 GHz Cortex-X2 & 3x2.40 GHz Cortex-A710 & 4x1.70 GHz Cortex-A510 | Adreno 730 [Designed for Rest of the World]

CAMERA & SOUND

Both variants, S22 and S22+, shares the same camera quality and design. A 50 MP primary camera with Dual Pixel PDAF and OIS features. Must have features like LED flash for low-light photography, auto-HDR and panorama are too embedded into all of their cameras.

Their camera is also able to produce excellent videography. It can record an 8K @ 24fps, 4K @ 30/60 fps, 1080p @ 30/60/240 fps and 720p @ 960 fps. In addition, the videography is boosted with HDR10+, stereo sound recording and gyro-EIS for Image Stabilization.

Although all three variants can record 4K @ 30/60 fps and 1080p @ 30fps and have the features of Dual video-call and auto-HDR embedded into their selfie camera, there is a slight difference in their lens quality. S22 and S22+ both have a 10 MP selfie camera with Dual Pixel PDAF feature, whereas S22 Ultra is equipped with a 40MP camera supported by PDAF tech.

All three mobiles are equipped with a stereo loudspeaker at the bottom of the phone but don’t support an audio jack.

BATTERY

All three variants are equipped with a non-removable battery. And due to its smaller size than the other two variants, S22 encloses a small battery with just 3700 mAh, which might be a problem. However, it is equipped with Fast Charging of 25W to mitigate smaller power problems. S22+ comes with 4500mAh battery power, while S22 Ultra packs a monster of 5000 mAh. Both of the latter devices supports 45W Fast Charging. In addition, all three devices support Qi/PMA certified wireless charging at 25W and can reverse charge at 4.5W.

All three variants share the same communication or connectivity feats. All of them can utilize Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC USB (Type-C 3.2), Wi-Fi Direct and Hotspot connectivity. They also support the feat of USB On-The-Go, which allows them to act as a host for other peripheral USB devices.

The three variants share most of the sensors attached to them. They are embedded with Fingerprint, Accelerometer, Gyro, Proximity, Compass, and Barometer sensors. Furthermore, Samsung DeX and Samsung wireless DeX feat allow users to cast their screens to bigger screens. In addition, Bixby natural language commands and dictation allows these phones to interpret the phrases and take action.

Apart from these, S22+ and S22 Ultra come with Ultra-Wideband (UWB) support for phone and tag tracking to look for lost phones or items with tags.
