Google Pixel 6a review: Is it the best Android phone under $500?

Design

The design for Pixel 6a is adopted from Pixel 6 as the camera visor/strip, and there is a two-tone back. The back side is covered with plastic, a pretty premium plastic. The camera is a little different as its strip is unique, with a Pixel 7-style oval cutout surrounding the two lenses, but it essentially feels like a smaller Pixel 6. It has a distinct two-tone appearance, with a camera bar running from side to side on the back, housing the dual-camera system and an LED flash.

Unlike its predecessor, the selfie camera is now located in the top centre of the display, rather than to the left. The phone is available in new colours to distinguish it from the rest of the Pixel 6 series, including sage, charcoal, and chalk.

Display

The Pixel 6a has a 6.1-inch display with a refresh rate of 60Hz. This display is smaller and less smooth than the Pixel 6's 6.4-inch display with a refresh rate of 90Hz. The Pixel 6a's display is also protected by Gorilla Glass 3, an older and weaker glass than the Gorilla Glass Victus used on the Pixel 6.

Processors 

Google's Tensor chip handles the Pixel 6a. This 8-core chip has two high-performance Cortex-X1 cores, two central cores, and four high-efficiency cores and is based on a 5nm manufacturing process. This is paired with a GPU with 20 cores. The tensor also has a mobile TPU and a Titan M2 security chip. The Pixel 6a has 6GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage. This cannot be expanded. The phone ships with Android 12 and will be "among the first Android devices to receive the upcoming Android 13 update," according to Google. The update is done for five years.

Camera

The dual rear camera setup includes a 12.2-mega Pixel primary camera and a 12-mega Pixel ultra-wide-angle sensor. There is a front camera, an 8-megaPixel. The device is IP67 rated, which means it can withstand some water.

Charger and Battery

The 4,410mAh battery in the Google Pixel 6a isn't the largest in the segment, but Google optimized its performance. The battery life can work for 12 hr consistently. Though Google Pixel 6a does not support wireless charging, the device supports an 18W wire charger. Like Apple and Samsung, the Google Pixel 6a does not provide a charging brick-in box, so you need to buy your charger that supports at least 18 W to get the maximum charging capacity.

Is It worth to Switch to the Pixel 6a?

Pixel 6a is the best phone with almost all the features of the more expensive Pixel 6. It has the best battery life, allowing you to play games, chit-chat, and do many more. It has a great camera even with the older sensor. It has excellent build quality on the back side that is technically plastic, but it’s adorable. In addition, Google Pixel 6a has excellent haptics and five years of security updates.

Along with the best quality, it still has some drawbacks as well. It does not have the best signal as others. It also does not have a wireless charger, and you need to charger to charge your phone. It also does not have an FP sensor as good as its competitors.

The 6a phone offers 18W fast charging support, an optical fingerprint sensor with a well-established dual-camera setup and Google's flagship Tensor chip. It is all wrapped in the new Pixel design, a pocket-friendly size at $449.
