Google to follow Apple on Advertisement Tracking

Apple took a stand last year regarding the ad tracking by the companies to send targeted ads to its customers. It let the customer decide whether or not they’d prefer those targeted ads, which, before this, a customer had no control over. It is a great initiative taken by Apple that now Google is opting towards.

Google has announced that it will introduce this feature on its Google Play service update from late 2021. This update is primarily to implement on phones with Android 12. However, Google says that it will make this feature gradually available to other Android OS as well from early 2022.

Apple’s App Tracking Transparency

Apple calls this feature the ATT. It is yet to know what Google’s nomenclature is going to be of this feature. However, we do know that Google is perfecting it with a more linked setting that allows easier control over opting out of the tracking. Instead of having pop-up messages on each app like Apple devices. The Android users also will have more option regarding this feature as opting out is not a default setting like in Apple devices.

The setting provides Android users better control and options regarding advertisement. There are to be notifications for opt-out preferences to help advertisers and developers, it seems. The details are yet to finalize, and we’ll have the details for this policy next month. Android users already have the setting to opt-out of personalized advertisement. However, it doesn’t fully restrict the advertisers of user activity.

What Next?

It is yet to see how all of these changes will roll out and the impact this creates in the market. However, it is undoubtedly a victory for the users as the company are getting more user-oriented. Furthermore, it is interesting to see Google chiming in on this policy, preventing Apple from having it as an exclusive feature.

Apple has always been the one with the upper hand regarding privacy and data, so it’s much interesting to see how Google’s move on this is going to change things. It is undoubtedly a win-win situation for the users, in any case.
